The community challenge is really the heart of the programme, this is what you’ll be fundraising for over the coming months! The projects we will deliver for the community focus on the three key areas – water conservation, medical facilities and education. We will fund and build a water conservation project and a medical centre in the Lake Natron area, as well as running health education workshops for the locals too.
More detail on these projects will be revealed to successful applicants at the induction event on April 30th, but to give you a bit of an idea, this is what we are working on:
• Visit the children of St Lazarus School in the Kenyan Slums and take them out on a day trip to the local wildlife centre. Funding will be used to continue the feeding programme at the school.
• Project: 5 day camp in the African Bush in Lake Natron – build a new clinic, water conservation project and classrooms for the community.
• Get involved with teaching the children and presenting health education workshops to the local Maasai.
This is really a great opportunity for you to bond with your team. On each trip there will be 30 participants, and you will be divided up into 5 teams (Team leaders are experienced Challenge people), and each team will be required to take on specific tasks to complete the project. The teams will cycle through tasks over the course of the trip, so don’t worry if there’s something you want to try! Tasks will include, brick laying, cement mixing, plastering, painiting and much more besides. Experience is not necessary as professionals will be on hand to guide you, but if you do have a particular skill we can put to use, even better!
