Fitness & Medical Advice

Fitness Advice

Fitness is essential! You don’t have to be an athlete to take part but to give yourself your best chance, ensure you use the months leading up to the trip to gradually build up your strength and aerobic ability. The best way to do this is by simply walking and training at the gym on a steady incline, ideally wearing the boots you intend to trek in.

Our Fitness Expert – Grant Powles – will hold a conference call to discuss fitness and training issues and is happy to talk to any participant directly if you have any worries, issues or simply want a tailored training plan.

Previous participants have also used their fundraising as an opportunity to get fit – charity bike rides, virtual climbs up mountains using gym equipment, it all helps!

Medical Advice

Altitude Sickness

Whilst there is no way to truly prepare yourself for the posibility of altitude sickness, we can offer some tried and tested methods to minimise the effects if you are unfortunate enough to be affected.

Immunisations

Yellow Fever vaccinations are a must for anyone intending to travel to Tanzania, if you don’t get your vaccination beforehand (and carry your vaccination card with you through customs) they will charge you a fee and give you your vaccination at the airport! Better to be prepared so get it out of the way early.

Whilst there are no other required vaccinations we advise that you consult with your Doctor for advice.

Malaria medication

There are several anti-malarial options available, whilst we have our own preferences on which work and offer the best value for money, we advise that you consult your Doctor for advice.
